Kids Update March 2009

Wow - March already! This year has just flown by so far….

Sammy is 20 months old and seems to finally be having a language explosion. He is babbling and trying to really communicate, and he is repeating a lot of words and putting 2 words together now. His enunciation isn’t that great still, so I am probably the only one who can truly understand what he is saying - but still….
New words I have heard him use this past month:
dinner, blackberry, strawberry, yogurt, map, sit, potty, jump, please, me, hand, hard, hole, stuck, wall, hot, cold, door, rock, banana, carrot, cereal, Aunt P, Ari, drive, car, hot potato, press play, smoothie, shoe, sock, home, house, i did it, happy, step, help, pants - just to name a few…
He also tries to count, but it usually sound like this “too, tee, too, tee, too, tee, too”. He counts before he jumps off something, and he counts when he is playing hide and seek with his sister and daddy.

He is loving to dance and run and he taught himself to somersault last month. I looked over and saw him bend forward and put his head on the ground, and then flip over. I don’t think he meant to do the flipping over part, I think he was just enjoying the view upside down. He has also been loving dumping things into other things. I remember when Rosie went through this phase too, I have to get out the big container of beans, pasta and measuring cups I made for her so Sammy can experiment and pour to his heart’s delight, instead of constantly having to clean up the yogurt dumped on his eggs, or the cereal dumped in his water.

His adventures with the potty

He is still showing a little interest in the potty, and still tells me often when he has pooped and needs a diaper change. He’ll come up to me and say “poop” and I will say “oh, do you need a diaper change” and he’ll say “dupuh cha” and I’ll say “ok, let’s go upstairs and change your diaper” and he will run to the stairs and go up to his room. It is pretty cool and amazing! It would be REALLY nice to be done with diapers, but I’m not gonna push it, I’ll probably let him have a lot of naked time this summer, when the weather warms up and just see how interested he really is. Mostly I think he is just imitating his sister when wanting to sit on the toilet.

Rosie is obsessed with cleaning fuzz out from between her toes lately. She is constantly taking off her shoes and socks and removing imaginary “fuzz” from between all her toes. She got a new phrase from her classmates or new neighborhood friends, “oh yeah baby!” and she has been saying it constantly and laughing. She loves school now and is happy and excited to go, barely giving me a backward glance when she walks in the doors.

She is really loving to sing, but still has a little shyness and sings quietly and has a hard time finding the tune sometimes, but she has been wanting me to help her practice the songs in her school songbook. She has been playing with the neighborhood kids a lot, now that the weather seems to be warming up a bit. It is great to hear a knock on the door and just be able to send her out to play for hours.

Aunt P gave Rosie all of Bubby Florence’s old costume jewelry, and Rosie has been having fun using it to play dress-up.

Rosie has been very observant lately and is always asking what signs say/mean when we are driving.

“what’s that sign with a deer on it mean mommy?”
“well, that sign means that deer sometimes cross the road here, so we have to be careful when we drive and watch out to make sure there are no deer trying to cross the road”

“what’s that sign say mommy?”
“well, that’s a speed limit sign, it says we can’t drive any faster than 35 miles an hour, because it’s not safe”

“what’s that sign mean mommy?”
“that means that the road is curvy up ahead, so we have to be careful and go slowly”

We took both kids to the Dr. for a check-up and to get a wellness form filled out for Rosie’s school. They were both at the tail end of the cold we had last month that just seemed to hang on forever, and Rosie had a mild ear infection, so she got her very first course of antibiotics. She seems all better now, and Sammy is still a little boogery, (as am I) but I am praying for 100% wellness by this coming week. Both kids had gone down a bit as far as the weight/height percentiles, but nothing to worry about. Sammy has definitely thinned out since he started walking (that was the last time we were in to see the Dr.) and Rosie has always been a little petite. She has days where she doesn’t eat much, but then there are other days (the majority of the time) where she snacks and munches non-stop all day. We promised to bring them back in in 4 months around their birthdays for another weight/height check. I can’t believe that I will have a 4 year old and 2 year old in just a few months!

  2. Hi Chelsea! I’m so glad I clicked your name on my journal comment because I thought it was my cousin Chelsea commenting!! Your kiddos are so gorgeous!! I think the last time I checked your journal was when Sammy was first born!! Wow, they do grow fast!

    So glad to reconnect!
I am very excited about my upcoming homebirth. I’m feeling my body getting ready for the big event. Its hard not knowing exactly when its going to happen, especially with a homebirth!
