Bad Dog!

Filed under: Rosie stuff - Administrator @ 9:22 pm

Rosie had her first major injury this past weekend - our normally gentle (yet hyper) dog, Georgia BIT ROSIE IN THE FACE!
It was a very scary moment. Joe turned around just in time to see the bite happen, but we have no idea what led up to it. We know Georgia had been growling at her when Rosie tried to eat her food - but other than that, she had never shown any aggression toward her or anyone else…
Rosie got it pretty bad right around the eye - she had a bite mark in her right eyebrow, and another one in the corner of her right eye (from Georgia’s bottom teeth)- and some deep scratches down her scalp (from the top teeth)

I was surprisingly calm throughout the whole trauma, I guess my mothering instincts just took over and I just acted without even thinking. Once the bite happened and Rosie started crying, Joe dragged Georgia outside and I quickly picked up Rosie - who had blood running down her face, and I grabbed a paper towel, wet it in the kitchen sink, and wiped away the blood to see where she was hurt - I saw both cuts by the eye and thought that the one on her eyebrow maybe needed a stitch - and we decided to go to the emergency room. Rosie was still crying and I started to nurse her and she immediately calmed down. I sat in the back seat and nursed her all the way to the hospital (only about 5 miles) and even walked in the emergency room with her still latched on…
Rosie was amazingly calm while the Dr. and Nurses examined her and made sure there was no injury to her eye - and they decided the cut was not deep enough to warrant a stitch - it would be more traumatic to put a stitch in than to just leave it alone and they said it would heal fine… After the initial injury - Rosie was pretty much back to normal, we went to Pauline’s for dinner to celebrate Ari’s 1st birthday and Rosie was still playing and active and kept trying to steal Ari’s pacifier like she likes to do…

We took her to an eye doctor to follow up and just be sure her eye was ok - and he said she looked fine…
Today is day 4 of the injury and the scab on her eyebrow just fell off and you can barely tell she ever got hurt…

I hope that is the only trip we ever have to take to the emergency room with her…

Now the dilemma is what to do with Georgia? We love this dog and Joe has had her since she was a puppy - for 6 years now. She has never acted like this before, but how do we trust her now around Rosie? We are going to talk to our vet, and to a dog trainer and get some opinions, but I think Georgia might be going to live on a farm in Indiana (and no, that is not a euphemism for putting her to sleep - Joe’s friend Zack actually lives on a farm and he said he might take her - that way Joe could still have visitation rights… We will see, it will be a tough decision either way…

  1. Thank goodness her eye wasn’t damaged! It may never happen
again, but would you want to chance it? Maybe Zack could take
the dog until the kid(s) are a little older. Then the dog would also
be older, and possibly more mellow. Just one option to consider.
    Rosie is such a cutie!
Thanks for sharing your lives with us. Love, A.P.
